Swiss Cottage beat University of London Union (Women’s Premier - London Volleyball League)
25:15 25:17 25:18

Season’s sixteenth Premiership victory
Glory, glory, Swiss Cottage! The team’s triumph at home over ULU meant it finished the season unbeaten.

The side had not had it all their own way with QKX taking them to five sets, Lionhearts taking a set off them at Bethnal Green and even bottom side Croydon doing the same at Talacre as had this final opposition when they had met in Rotherhithe. Our congratulations to them on completing the competition with a 100% record. They imposed themselves on this last game from the start and ULU had great difficulty in converting service into points as the back court, marshalled by Marta Cerri, proved strong in reception and promptly secured side out when demanded. Kadri Luus initiated one point to make it 12:6, Adriane Ribeiro came on as a sub at 10:18 and produced one excellent serve and Janneke Van Blijswijk, right at the end, gave respectability to the score as her serves allowed the students to progress from 20:12 to 20:15. However, her efforts provoked Cottage into finishing off the set in great style.

Danny Primus had switched setters late in the first set bringing on Sophie Szyszko for Cristina Maddedu and for the second he asked Umit Yalkin and Tereza Hejretova to take to the court. It took a little time for the new formation to settle and ULU took their opportunity to make the league leaders work harder. However, from 1-all, they were always behind although it was only 10:8 at one stage. From then on, Cottage increasingly took control, Cristina setting from 11:8 to 18:15 and, having faced a well judged second time-out at 21:16 promptly polished of the rest of the set after losing service at that stage.

Cottage made a couple more changes at the start of the third and ULU grabbed the first two points and advanced to 3:5 playing some great volleyball. Cottage determination then kicked in and within a few minutes coach Kostas Kirikas was asking for a time out with his side down 5:8 as the hosts’ back court took charge and remained in control for the remainder of the game. Danny rested a couple of players and brought back Tereza for a final effort at 17:13. At 20:13 Kostas gave his squad a pep talk and they responded well cutting the deficit to three points at 21:18 but Swiss Cottage pride enabled them to finish the match in style.
