Putney lost to Balham Bears (Men’s D2 Red - London Volleyball League)
16:25 21:25 23:25
Improving Putney surprise high flyers
It looked as though Putney rather surprised themselves by performing very well against near neighbours Balham Bears who have had a much more successful season.
So much so that it seemed they ran out of self-belief when leading 15:12 in the opening set and suffered a run of lost rallies that even a time out at 15:16 and another at 15:18 failed to halt. They recovered service to reach 20:16 but failed to convert the opportunity into points and Bears took the remaining five rallies of the set. It took just one player short of three rotations of service to complete the second set so keenly was it contested. With a time out at 10-all and a substitution at 11-all, Putney kept Bears on their toes but it remained close throughout the set and the damage was all done in a brief spell from 14-all when, with Pablo Otero gaining serve and Manuel Ferreira, Simon Roscoe and Simon Condon strong at the net, Balham took the score to 14:18. That four point lead earned them the set.
Having lost the opening rally on service in the third, Putney immediately took a 3:1 lead and, in twenty minutes of thrilling play remained in front for most of the set, albeit by only a point or two. Balham eventually got on terms at 21 all and then took the lead by winning the next rally. Putney were not finished and fought back to lead 23:22. Then Balham showed their class and a determination worthy of the division’s runners up and finished off the match.
