Men's Premier Division (London Volleyball League) Lionhearts Alpha lost to Onyx Black, 23:25 21:18 19:21 23:21 12:15
Significant win in five sets
With a couple of games in hand over their visitors, Lionhearts look more frimly established in mid table position vis à vis their opponents but the closest of victories by Onyx Black in Bethnal Green makes the mid table competition now look even more tight.

Onyx made an encouraging start, winning the first rally on Alpha's serve and taking the next three on their own. Thereafter, things were very close as the lead changed hands as frequently as the time-outs flowed while both sides strove for mastery. Onyx had set point at 22:23 but made no mistake at 23:24 to take a one set lead that had not looked likely in the later stages of the set. Serving this time, Onyx again opened the second set with a four point lead but Alpha were on terms at 10:all and there was nothing between the teams to 17:all. Onyx won the next rally but side out then brought Bartlomiej Plotka to position one and his serving secured the set for the home side.

Set three. Onyx again started well. But just two points this time before Alpha responded. Then what a set! Onyx actually led from start to finish but just by a point or two. Their biggest lead was 6:9, the only time it was as large a three. Enough again to take a one set lead. Set four and Alpha won the opening rally for the only time in the match. They went to 2:0 and looked to have mastered their opponents when they stretched their advantage to 18:10. It was just an Onyx blip. they roared back and, despite a time out at 18:13, Mladen Bundalo's serving and a purple patch by the front three of Bruno Espinho, Audrius Tracauskas and Luciano took their side into an 18:19 lead. Things were tense as it became 18:20 but Alpha halted the run of points, tied the set at 21:all and soon the match at two all.

So to the final set. 0:4 to Onyx, again starting very well. They went to 2:7 and 4:8 and were looking comfortable when the teams changed ends. Alpha were not giving up though. They steadily reduced the lead to 12:14 but lost a dramatic final rally that went the visitors' way.

Congratulations to all involved in a great match.
