Lower Giants slip to Lionhearts
Perhaps an unusual note on the score-sheet explained the result. It read, "All Giants' players playing up". However, there was no sign that either team allowed the fact to affect the way they played and after three relatively close sets, East imposed themselves on proceedings and took it in comfort.

The opening set was close throughout and one side or the other led until things were tied for one more time at 16:all. Lionhearts held their nerve the better and then shaded the remaining rallies to go a set ahead. Giants began the second strongly, taking an immediate two point lead before increasing it to 4:1 and a bit later to 10:5. Initially, the timeout at 7:4 had done nothing to improve East's play but they gradually improved and were soon playing the better volleyball. At 13:10 they forced Giants to call a time-out but East were still improving and forced another at 16:all. That steadied the home players. although East went ahead 16:17, Giants overtook them to take the set.

The success brought out the best in Lionhearts and they raced through the first part of the third set looking to be in complete control as they reached 11:19 despite two time-outs. However, they make a jittery finish to the set eventually winning it by only three points as Giants at last raised their game. Lionhearts looked home and dry after reaching 13:20 in the fourth set but Giants saved match point after match point as Giants' Eleonore Caby produced a string of accurate serves while Elisabetta Bottaro, Serena Pedrazzi and Monica Vernia combined well in front court. Eventually, the run faltered and side-out gave Lionhearts the match and top place in the league table. For the winners, Bruna Fabbri Aziani, Gloria Francalanci and Margherita Neri had been constants on court but the squad played well with effective substitutions all playing their part in a valuable win.

Five of the seven teams below them in the table could, in a couple of good results, take over top spot. An absorbing season looks to be building.
