Season opening thriller, Men's Premier Division (London Volleyball League) Wapping Wildcats lost to Richmond, 14:21 21:19 21:13 18:21 12:15
Tight five-setter opens top men's season
After two hours and fifteen minutes the score was two sets all, each side having scored 74 points. It could not have been more tense as tiring teams began the deciding set.

It had been a great game even up to that point. Richmond enjoyed a slight early advantage in the first set but from 6:10, following a Wildcats' time-out at the end of the previous rally, they pulled steadily away to change ends looking to be in a comfortable situation. They continued to look the stronger side in the following set, leading 8:13 at one stage. However, Wildcats then raised their game, forced a time-out at 11:13 and then another after they had taken the lead at 18:17. Richmond battled back. they tied the score at 19:all. Wildcats sought a time out. Nerves settled, they won the next rally and Mark Baechli's accurate serve led to the home side to levelling the score. It was Kevin Spellman's serving that was key to third set success, however, as he took Wildcats from 3:all to 11;3 and well as Richmond played after that, they could make no inroads into the deficit and the third set ended with them still eight points adrift. The teams traded point for point in the fourth set until the score reached 5:4 when Richmond raised their game and secured a three point lead at 5:8, a lead they clung on to the end of the set as both sides emphasised how little difference in standard there was between them

So the final set begins. Wildcats enjoy a slight advantage at 6:4 when Richmond take a time out. Regrouped, they lead 7:8 as the teams change ends. Looking the more confident, Richmond advance to match point at 11:14. Wildcats take a time out and save the situation. It is 12:14. Richmond immediately ask for their final time out. It settles any jangling nerves and the final rally goes their way.

What an ending! What a match! What a start to the new season!
