London Junior Competition
Biggest competition yet in 2019-20
All the promising signs last season that youngsters are increasingly turning to volleyball as their sport of choice seem to be coming true as the 2019/20 season gets under way. London's Junior Development Officer, Elsa Meserlian reports that the competition is already full and perhaps even over-subscribed but what has delighted her most is the enthusiasm everyone is showing for the programme, saying, " I'm getting text messages requesting clubs for juniors, and competitions for clubs around the clock. I haven't felt this much enthusiasm for the league since we started!"

Part of the catalyst for the expansion has been the London Youth Games in which some 800 or so youngsters participate each year and the Association pays tribute to that organisation's work over many years. Now the LVA plans to have competitions for Under 12 (mixed), under 15 boys, under 15 girls, under 16 boys, under 16 girls, under 18 boys and under 18 girls. Seven girls' rounds are already confirmed and good progress is being made to complete the boys'. Indeed, the Association already has the largest number of tournaments for juniors it has ever held and there is a prospect of yet more.

It's also noteworthy from the published information that careful consideration has been given to making it easier and more enjoyable by holding two competitions in one day (tier 1 and tier 2) allowing for a more varied level of play and reducing travel time

Although there are likely to be some under 12 (mixed) games at an earlier date, the first confirmed event will be an under 15 girls Grand Prix tournament organised by Richmond VC at Grey Court School, TW10 7HN, on 19th October starting at 12 noon. It is the same day as the NEVZA under 17 championships in Denmark. At least two London boys will be playing for England in the NEVZA competition but their national team calls won't conflict with the date.

But more of this season's competitors could be on international duty in years to come. If you are interested in junior volleyball or have youngsters or teams who want to be a part of this, then contact Elsa (junior.lva@londonvolleyball.org.uk)
