Commonwealth Games Beach Volleyball
2022 inclusion a step closer
Volleyball's beach players have just received encouraging news from Volleyball England after its governing body had heard from the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee that the decision had been taken to try to include beach volleyball in the Games.

The city now awaits the final decision from the Commonwealth Games Federation for it to be part of Birmingham 2022. The sport featured in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 2018 on Queensland's Gold Cost where England were represented by Jess Grimson and Victoria Palmer in the women's competition and by Jake Sheaf and Chris Gregory in the men's. They and beach players across the country now hope for confirmation that their sport will feature again in the Birmingham Games

“Beach Volleyball was an enormous success in the Gold Coast in 2018,” said Richard Callicott, President of the British Volleyball Federation. “I am delighted with Birmingham’s decision to recommend that beach volleyball should feature in the Games.”

The choice was made by a panel of representatives from the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Birmingham City Council and Commonwealth Games England. Key criteria were set, written submissions invited and individual presentations made to the panel from each sport. The panel needed to consider financial factors, the availability of suitable venues, the potential for additional revenue from ticket sales and/or sponsorship as well as alignment with the Commonwealth Games Federation Constitution and with the objectives of Games partners. The Birmingham 2022 Board then selected five sports or disciplines and, in addition to Beach Volleyball named Archery (Recurve), Cricket, Shooting (Clay Target, Full Bore, Pistol and Small Bore) and ParaTable Tennis.
