National Regional Championships
All four London teams return with medals
Not all eyes were on East London over the May bank holiday weekend. Diverted by the requisition of the volleyball centre for the EU elections were the under 15s to University of Leicester and the under 17s to the brand-new facilities at the University of Warwick. Brilliant is the word used by one report of the event. The girls’ event was played on the Saturday and Sunday with the boys following on Sunday and Monday.

Under 15 Girls
London finished runners up after a closely contested final against near neighbours, the South-east region. They had gone down to the same team 25:22 8:22 12:15 in the first round pool. In the final the score was 25:17 25:23. The North West were third.

Under 17 Girls
In the older age group, the South West were crowned champions after defeating the North West 25:22 19:25 15:11. The teams were top of their respective pool so it was a clear battle for supremacy. London finished third after beating East Midlands having been the only team to take a set off South West and North West. The score 25:9 25:21.

Under 15 Boys
A different format was used for the boys. With seven regions competing, the competition was a league with each team playing each other once. Six games made for a busy day. Only the West Midlands and the South-west were to take a set off London as they won every match and West Midlands were to finish second with the South-west third.
The MVPs chosen were Enrique Bello of London and Benjamin Butler of West Midlands.
Coach Orhan Colak said afterwards, “I’m very pleased to meet this group of young talented athletes. The tournament was packed with games and the days went quite fast However all my athletes were hungry for more games. Considering I’ve met the boys only three times, I think we all did a good job.
Although all the boys were talented, I must mention Enrico and Nahome who were particularly talented and played well. We did our best and brought the gold home. I wish all the boys best of luck and I look forward meeting them in future competitions.”

Under 17 Boys
London seized gold at Under 17 level too. And the team was also victorious in all its matches.
The runners up were South East who London had beaten 19:25 25:22 15-8. The South East took silver and the West Midlands bronze.
The MVP was shared between East’s Max Norton-Steele, Yorkshire’s Ben Gladstone and London’s Nasir Khan.
