England Junior teams to compete in Italy
Open in new windowVolleyball England announced yesterday (11th April) the teams to represent the country in Italy over the Easter holiday. After arriving on Friday 19th, the teams will play three matches in a pool on Saturday and then move to a series of play off matches on Sunday before playing for their final position on Sunday.

The competition will involve a mixture of national and club teams from the Under 19 age groups, including Poland, Italy, Russia, Germany and Japan. It is the 37th edition of the tournament since its establishment in 1983, making it one of the oldest junior competitions in the world.

The Junior Men will begin their matches on Saturday 20th April against Poland in their first group match, before fixtures against the German national team and French club side La Piave Volley. It will be a first tournament for the team's newly appointed coaching team. Since last year’s tournament, head coach Steve Anderson has moved up from assistant coach with Kieran Sowden appointed as his assistant. The boys' side contains five players from London, all from Richmond: Benjamin Lucas, Jonathan Drysdale-Anderson, Joshua Green, Noah Goalen, Yoan Kuzmanov.

It will also be a debut for the England Junior Women, the first time the women's Under 19s have competed in the Cornacchia World Cup and they will hope to make their mark as they begin their campaign against Italian club side Treviso on the same day as the boys. Their other group matches are against German club side Arge Baden-Wurttemberg and another Italian club, Libertas Martignacco Udine. Like the men’s team, this will be the first major tournament for the coaching team. Danny Primus as head coach with assistant Alex Smith will take charge of their first tournament. There will be just two girls in the squad who are based in London. they are Kate Keefe also of Richmond and Leah Blight from Ashcombe who plays for Polonia.

Both finals will be played in the Palasport Crisefulli in Pordenone on Sunday afternoon. London volleyball wishes the teams success as they battle to be on court there.
