SGSS Southall lost to VPS Galaxy, 22:20: 22:24:22 6:21 14: 21 Division 2B (Men's London Volleyball League)
Shock confrontation of challengers
SGSS Southall hosted the return match with VPS Galaxy at Dormer Wells Leisure Centre in positive mode given their recent win at Thunderball. VPS and Giants are the stand out top teams in this league and Southall knew it would be a big ask to beat the second placed team in the league.

The first set was a cracker with Southall fielding a new player Hristo Danailov in a team which improved their first pass and defence in particular. The set was neck and neck all the way along with both teams calling a time out half way through. There was pressure jump serving from player/coach Rajinder Sangha for Southall and Reza Towfighi for VPS kept the spectators on their toes. Southall managed to edge into a 19:17 lead and were looking to close but VPS came back with a late rally. At 20:19 and the set point Southall, could not finish but they got another chance and much to the joy of the home crowd took the first set to the surprise of the form book and league positions, 22:20.

Set 2 was the key point of the evening. Both teams were now fighting hard but VPS were stronger and took a big 15-10 lead thanks to more pressure serving in particular from Reza Towfighi. However Southall were not done yet and off the back of great float serving of their own from their captain Shamsher Singh, got right back into the set at 16:16! A nail biting close was on the cards and it delivered exactly to the forecast! Southall had a two set points to take a surprise 2:0 lead but each time VPS pushed back and recovered. Eventually much to the delight and relief of the away team they took the set to even the score on the night at 1:1.

Perhaps mentally effected in the third set lost from a winning position Southall dropped their game and VPS pushed on to win very easily win the set 6:21. Southall regrouped for set 4 but it wasn’t anywhere near enough as VPS took the set and the match 14:21.

Open in new windowOverall it was a wonderful night of quality volleyball, played at a high tempo and standard. The first two sets were superb and player/Coach Rajinder Sangha was delighted at the improvement in his team. This positive was offset by the injury to the new Southall player Hristo Danailov but overall, well done to all the officials, supporters and teams for a great entertaining game as the Men’s league 2B comes to life!
