Cup and League (men's and women's national competition)
Eagles to challenge Polonia; Dartford top their division
In a weekend taken up with a lot of representative participation, only three London teams were in action in national competition but all three won.

A third London side joined the four men's teams that will feature in the semi-finals of the men's Cup when they take place on 23rd February. It will be Malory Eagles who demonstrated that there is very little difference in standard between the Super League’s three bottom teams of the top section and the two top teams of the lower one by travelling to Sheffield on Saturday and coming home with a thoroughly deserved victory. They started very well by winning the first two sets, withstanding an excellent attacking performance by the home side. Sheffield maintained their performance for the next two sets, winning both, to set up a thrilling climax. Malory showed their class and character and used the experience of their coach to get on top in the final set. IBB Polonia, their semi-final opponent may be undefeated so far this season but, on the evidence of this performance, dare not be complacent.

Polonia Sideout continued their good start to the second half of the season with victory in Bristol in the women's Super League. After the long journey west in wintry travelling conditions, they exploded into action to subdue their hosts in the opening set. Bristol quickly settled, however, and the rest of the match was close although, having shaded the second set, the London side always looked to be heading for victory.

There is a new name at the top of the table of women's Division Two. Dartford's beating Southampton takes them there. The visitors are struggling in the bottom half of the table but they played very well, taking the third set after challenging hard in the second. Following that, however, Dartford raised their game and produced volleyball of a standard close to their best to win in four sets. Top of the table is an achievement of which they can be proud but they have played one or two more matches than their nearest rivals one of which, Richmond, with two games in hand is only two points behind.

A good weekend for London volleyball.
