Men's Premier : Richmond step up a gear

Premier Division (Men's London Volleyball League)
Leaders take 31:29 set to keep unbeaten record
With two Richmond victories in the first weeks following the Christmas break, they are setting the hottest pace in the division although Onyx, beaten finally in a 31:29 set and Lynx who overcame nest-to-bottom of the table ULU, are poised to challenge.

Richmond's wins came six days apart, first beating Spikers at Paddington Green. The home side had taken a short while to settle, losing the first set comparatively easily before winning the second in a tie-break only for Richmond to shade sets three and four by the smallest possible margin. Their fourth place in the division looks wholly deserved. Richmond's win, however, took them to the top of the table albeit having played one more game than Onyx, also unbeaten, the side they were due to play on 27th January.

Played at Kingston College Arena, hosts Richmond won the first two sets against Onyx without looking unduly troubled but the visitors then looked to have adjusted to their opponents' style and tactics and overwhelmed them in the third set. A titanic struggle followed and eventually Richmond finished on top with a fourth set ending 31:29. The season has properly warmed up early. Richmond stay top. Onyx, with one loss only, maintain their challenge.

Prior to those matches, ULU entertained Lynx at St Augustine's School and produced a display that belies the teams' relative league position. They lost a close first set 18:21 and then won the second by the identical score. Lynx looked worried for a while and eventually surrendered the third set 23:21 and a shock result looked a possibility but Lynx called on their experience and, with great determination, dominated the rest of the evening. One loss only like Onyx, Lynx are poised to surprise. ULU are still without a win.

Wildcats, with two losses, still threaten.
