Onyx A beat Lynx 1, 16:21 21:16 21:16 21:18 Premier Division (Men's London Volleyball League)
One of three unbeaten sides loses the accolade
Along with Richmond, the sides that met at Latimer Road on 28th November were setting the pace in the division; all three holding an unbeaten record and after a great opening by the visitors from the east, Onyx battled back to take the honours.

Each side had a player playing up from their second team: Luciano Quercia for Onyx and Ephraim Mills for Lynx but Onyx's Luciano played just a minor tactical role in the third set whilst Ephraim played through most of all four sets for Lynx, substituted briefly in sets three and four.

The opening set was extraordinarily close with never more than two points between the teams and the scores tied regularly until they reached 16:all. Then Lynx secured a seventeenth point, captain Lance Symister rotated to serve and the home side seemed to lose its usual confidence for a few minutes. It was enough to give Lynx first blood.

With Diego Tamborini serving, Onyx immediately went three points ahead at the start of the second set. Then from 5:3 they raced to 11:3 before Lynx scored again, helped by accurate serves from François Leroy and sound attacking by a front line comprising Iulian Cravet, Svetoslav Gyurov and Diego. Lynx regrouped and both teams played very well to the end of the set but Lynx were only able to recover three points of the deficit.

Set three continued much as the second had finished with great play by both teams and nothing to choose between the sides. Eventually the score reached 15:14 when another spell of good serving, this time by Onyx's Michal Savolt, led to a four point cushion and the hosts finished the set in a fashion similar to the one Lynx had polished off the first. If anything, the standard of play was even higher in the fourth set and, having taken an immediate lead, Lynx kept themselves two or three points in front for most of it, Lance, with Kacper Rutkowski and Benas Sileika alongside, especially catching the spectators' eye. Then the familiar Onyx determination exerted itself and they were on terms at 13:all. They moved two points ahead only to be caught again. The teams exchanged points to 17:all as tension increased. Iulian rotated to serve and held his nerve in the tense atmosphere. Two accurate serves enabled the home side to get to 20:17. A good Lynx attack saved match point but, the following rally lost, yielded their unbeaten record..

Richmond are due to welcome Onyx to Kingston Arena on 27th January. It will be a clash we are all looking forward to. Lynx and Onyx meet again on 17th March at Rokeby School: a match that will attract loads of supporters.
