Men's Premier Division (Men's London Volleyball League)
Flaming Six Aces beat Inter Premier 16:21 21:14 21:15 27:25
Aces recover after Inter pressure
Open in new windowTwo well matched sides entertained an encouraging sized and vociferously supportive crowd in a match that proved exciting throughout though early season errors rather marred the quality of the volleyball. In the end, after a tense and close spell of play the home side took the honours.

Inter made an impressive start to the game racing to lead 1:2 and then 2:4 before stretching away to 7:13 and looking as though they were in total control. Aces then managed to close the gap but looked outclassed at 13:20. Great serving by newcomer Starfield softened some of their blushes as they cut the gap by two but Inter then finished off the set.

It was Aces who made the better start to the second set looking much more determined and playing a lot better, captain Andrew Saward setting an excellent example and the setting variety of Petrov Stanislav proving crucial. Very quickly they were 12:6 in front and although a great cross-court spike from the left by skipper Christian Perri cut the gap to four at 14:10, the home side again raised their game to take the set by seven points. Initially the third set was very close and it looked rather as some tension had set in and there were a succession of service errors that took the score to 8:all. By now Aces were reading their opponent's minimum sized squad the better and some great serving by Petrov Stanislav took Aces in front 14:8. Inter then regrouped and started to play well but Aces refused to allow them to get on top and the final stages of the set produced the best quality volleyball of the match.

The fourth set was much more exciting though. Aces made a strong start and promptly took a 4:0 lead but Inter battled back and gradually drew closer and eventually drew level at 19:all when, not for the first time, Marzio Scottoni hit cleverly off the block on the left. Inter had a set point at 21:22 but for the rest of this period they were having to save match point after match point. Eventually the score-board read 25:all. Brendan Beck hit a stunning shot for Aces to serve for a fifth match point and, Inter having failed to return the ball with pressure, the home side set up a good attack on the left and it seemed appropriate that the winning shot, a cross court spike, should come from Andrew Saward.

Aces will be relieved to have started the season with success.
