Boys beat Hackney, Girls overcome Haringey
In excellent finals Wandsworth girls got the better of Haringey 25:22 25:7 and the borough's boys saw off Hackney 28:26 25:17

An excellent tournament at SportsDock, the huge sports complex of the University of East London, with matches going on all day and the only one-sided game being the one being played in Nizhny Novgorod and shown on several TV screens around the venue.

The two teams were closely matched for the first set of the girls' final but Haringey lost their cohesion in the second and found it harder and harder to recover as Wandsworth intelligently maintained their pressure. They avoided any trouble as they staked their claim on the trophy. Meanwhile, on the adjacent court Tower Hamlets were overcoming Brent, also in two sets, to claim the bronze medals.

In the other hall, spectators cheered two excellent teams in a very close boys' final. Hackney looked the better side throughout the opening set but they tightened up on achieving set point and although they quickly regained their composure, the experience of Wandsworth's squad took it to safety. They increased their pressure in the second set and played particularly well at the net. After opening a comfortable lead by mid-way through the set, they held their own against Hackney's efforts to close the gap and deservedly claimed the winners' Cup. The play-off for third and fourth place was between the title holders, Enfield and Ealing with the north London borough coming out on top after three good sets.

There were fewer participants than originally anticipated and a couple of teams failed to arrive on the day but the thirty-five who gave their all on an extremely hot day all deserve loads of praise. The lower teams finished in the following order:

5th Harrow, Kingston, Westminster, Waltham Forest
9th Lambeth, Hillingdon, Camden, Barnet
13th Havering, Bexley, Bromley, Croydon
17th Hackney, Enfield

5th Newham, Barnet, Bexley, Waltham Forest
9th Lambeth, Brent, Richmond, Havering
13th Haringey, Bromley, Hillingdon, Harrow
17th Croydon
