Beach Volleyball semi-final (Commonwealth Games)
Australia win gold and silver
Although it is great to wind up our series of reports from the Commonwealth Games with an English match to report and repeating that our women's pair of Jess Grimson and Vicky Palmer came very close to beating bronze/fourth place Vanuatu when they met in the pool stage, Jake Sheaf and Chris Gregory lost today's match.

They met Ben and Sam O'Dea of New Zealand, a team they had also faced in the preliminary pool and won the opening set before being beaten. Today (12th April) their opposition looked the more confident side when it mattered, starting strongly in both sets and remaining in control in the later stages as England fought back to take them to the bronze medal. England get nothing for their efforts - except our praise. We know how difficult it is for top volleyballers to get funding in our country.

In the men's final that followed Christopher McHugh and Damien Schumann (Australia) beat Samuel Pedlow and Sam Schachter (Canada), 21:19 18:21 18:16

The women's title went to Canada in another close final as they overcame the host country by shading two sets as Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan (Canada) beat Mariafe Artacho del Sol and Taliqua Clancy (Australia), 21:19 22:20

The women's bronze medal match went to Linline Matauatu and Miller Pata (Vanuatu) who beat Mariata Angelopoulou and Manolina Konstantinou (Cyprus), 21:14 21:10

Full details of the tournament are available on the Games' web site www.gc2018.
