Onyx A beat Waltham Forest (Men’s D1A - London Volleyball League)
21:13 21:17 21:18

League season ends with tight finish
Onyx A had already secured promotion before this, their last league fixture of the season but pride demanded a win to claim also an unbeaten record. Despite a tight finish to the third set, the club achieved its aim and its supporters rejoiced.

They were somewhat tense in the opening stage and, perhaps, a little surprised at the excellent play from Forest but from 8:7 gradually pulled away to take the first set quite easily, Filipe de Almeida playing up from the B team and adopting the libero role, a stalwart in back court. Good play from both teams kept the second set close right through to 11:all but Onyx had the greater success from that stage on and took the set with a four point margin. They then looked like racing away with the match as they moved rapidly to lead the third set 14:9 but Forest then showed character and determination and scared the league leaders as they closed to 18:16 then 19:17 despite a time-out at 14:11 and another at 18:15. But nerves held. Side-out was secured and Victor Valov served for the twentieth and then set, match, title point.

Mission accomplished.
