Men's Div. 2 A : Crusaders silence Thunderball

Thunderball lost to Flaming Six Crusaders (Men’s D2A - London Volleyball League)
21:15 17:21 18:21 20:22

Victors move into third place
With SQUAD and Onyx B setting the pace in the division, there are four clubs squabbling for third place so this game was important to both teams. Initially things looked very good for the home side, Thunderball, but visitors, Flaming Six Crusaders settled into a rhythm that took them through a close and entertaining game.

In the early stage both teams looked cagey and one side and then the other took a small lead. Then in mid set Thunderball moved ahead 9:7 than 12:8 before moving steadily away, looking the better and more determined side. The second set was initially remarkably similar but this time it was Crusaders who sprinted to a 4:8 lead and held on to win the set by the same four point margin although their opponents drew level at 17:all before a good winning rally and calm serving by Krasi Zhechev enabled them to tie the match.

After losing the opening rally of the third, Crusaders always held a slight edge as the match continued although, yet again, Thunderball tied the score, this time at 18:all, before looking to have lost their confidence. A wildly fluctuating fourth set followed. Crusaders raced from 2:1 to 1:12 and then Thunderball recovered to 9:12 and then tied the score at 14:all. Crusader then held on to a single point advantage after alternative rallies until they reached 20:21. Thunderball needed one more side out but, receiving a well placed serve from Chris Taylor, failed to take it.

Disappointment for the home team and its faithful supporters. Joy to be taken back to Battersea.
