Fireball beat EBC Greenhouse (Men’s D2B - London Volleyball League)
23:21 21:17 21:15

Improving juniors make their mark
Fireball are still one of the contenders for promotion, even the divisional title. Greenhouse are bottom of the table. Yet this game produced an exciting contest and the young players from Ernest Bevin Academy showed considerable talent and determination especially in the first two sets before falling to another defeat.

Fireball initially looked as though they were going to sweep Greenhouse aside, winning the first five rallies despite a time-out at 4:0 and then moving to 8:1. They were playing well but the opposition appeared overawed in the wide spaces of the college sports-hall. Although they settled, the side was still six points adrift when Ashley Trodden took another time-out at 14:8. Gradually they improved and some good play at the net by Nasir Khan took his side to 16:12 before he rotated to serve following successive side-outs and his accurate serves and more good attacks through Stephen Cofie, Thomas Jefferson and Ted Turner levelled things at 18:all. Greenhouse eventually enjoyed a set point at 20:21 but Fireball experience and nerveless serving by Nicolas Vecchione saved the day.

A good close second set followed. Neither side got on top during the first part and the scores were still tied at 9:all. Then a short spell followed during which Fireball gained the upper hand and they took a lead of 16:11. Greenhouse they recovered their form and closed to 17:19 before the greater confidence of the adults took control. So to the third set in which Fireball gradually turned the screw. Had there been technical time-outs it would have been 8:6 at the first and 16:9 at the second while Greenhouse marginally outscored Fireball in the final few rallies.

Encouragement for Greenhouse then; relief for Fireball.
