Posted by Douglas Barr-Hamilton on 2017/12/20 17:20:00 (173 reads)

Giants 2 lost to Lionhearts Pride (Men’s D2B - London Volleyball League)
21:15 21:17 13:21 19:21 11:15

Hosts fade after magnificent start
Playing at home with a full squad of twelve and a large band of supporters, Giants started with a roar. They won seven of the first eight rallies, six with Matthias Cuciniello, serving and never looked back, Pride only settling when near enough down and out at 19:11 to add a little respectability to the score.

Pride brought on both bench players for the second set but, Misha Skurikhin was marooned in back court as Giants, after losing the opening rally, raced to 10:1, Daniel Nesbitt producing a string of stunning serves. After that the home side looked to have over-relaxed and Pride worked their way into the game, if not yet into contention. Dino Vo, Peter Wu and Misha enjoying an outstanding spell at the net. Jaser Osmond had his turn in the third when, after Pride had eased into a small lead, he was instrumental in many of the attacks that took his side to 3:10 and, although Giants settled after that and raised their game to give the crowd a close contest for the rest of the set, the gap between the sides remained little changed and Pride were back in the game.

The following set was a thrilling one. Pride opened a four point lead early on and, although Giants played very well thereafter, the visitors soaked up the pressure and remained four points ahead at 16:20. Coach Guilia Ponti called a time-out and Giants punished the weakness spotted and soon were forcing Paolo Montalbano to call a time-out to correct matters. It was 19:20, He had read it right and a fifth set had been earned.

Giants began the decider well but then slipped to 4:9 despite two time-outs. From that point they played well enough but the teams are of a pretty equal standard had they did not have the fire power to trouble Pride who, to the hosts' disappointment and their own joy, go into the mid-winter break above them in the league table.
