Fireball beat Dynasty (Men’s D2B - London Volleyball League)
21:16 19:21 24:22 19:21 15:10

Last unbeaten record goes
Dynasty remain top of the table but they are now just one of three sides whose record shows a single loss. The division looks to be developing into one giving London volleyball an exciting second half to the season and Fireball looked good enough to earn a place among the challengers.

They made an excellent start to this match, immediately taking a two point lead and moving quickly to 9:4 despite a Dynasty time-out at 8:4. The visitors settled after that and the vociferous crowd had to work hard to keep their heroes up to the mark in the second two-thirds of the set in which each side matched the other, Fireball easing home at the end after Dynasty had closed to 19:16.

After even opening exchanges in the second set, Dynasty took a small lead only for Fireball to level things at 9:all and, in their turn take a tiny lead up to 15:all from which point Dynasty kept in front to level things at one set each. Dynasty seemed to have recovered their league-leader form at the start of the third when they went 1:5 in front but Fireball battled back to draw level at 8:all after which an enthralling period of play followed. The score eventually reached 22:all. Fireball earned side out. Skipper, Rob Wykes rotated to serve, held his nerve while rallying the rest of the six and the home side once again led by a set.

Dynasty had something to say about that while Fireball had the bit between the teeth. The spectators were in for another thrilling set. All the players performed well and, if a special mention is deserved, it would be Fireball's Eric Gargano who had come on briefly as a sub in the first two sets and played throughout the third. He made full use of the chance to impress the club hierarchy as the lead changed hands regularly. With Fireball leading 19:18 it happened one more. Dynasty's Ling Luan who had only been on court for eight rallies rotated to serve when his team secured side-out. His experienced placement, perhaps helped by his time court-side, earned the visitors a fifth set. Dynasty looked nervous early in the set, rapidly falling behind 6:1. They recovered after that but remained behind 8:4 when the teams changed ends and, with home support cheering them on, Fireball held their composure and form to move from 13:10 to take the match and the applause.

When we have lost the savour of Christmas fare, we can savour the second half of the volleyball season.
