Men's Div. 2 B : Giants still growing at Osemka

K S Osemka 2 beat Giants B (Men’s D2B - London Volleyball League)
21:15 21:17 22:20
Osemka move into first place
With the advantage of having played more games, K S Osemka 2 moved to the top of the table after a battling victory over Giants B while their steadily improving opponents will be encouraged by their performance in Ealing.

Giants began the first set well and remained more on less on equal terms with Osemka after taking a 0:2 and 3:4 lead: still in contention at 12:13. From that point confidence seemed to ebb away and they probably needed a time-out a little earlier than15:20, beset by good serving from Darek Krajewski. To his credit, Darek held his nerve and another good serve led to a successful rally and the set.

It took a half a dozen rallies for Giants to overcome the disappointment and they quickly fell behind in the second set. Then from 4:1 they started to play much better, forcing an Osemka time-out at 6:5 and eventually going into an 8:10 lead. It was promptly clawed back and an exciting period of play followed with Giants making five substitutions in their attempt to unsettle their opponents. It got them to 16:all. Osemka's extra experience then kicked in; Leszek Lecnar and Henri Bertrand combined well at the net and they moved two points ahead. Side out yielded only the single point for Giants before Henri served for the rally that gave his team a two set advantage.

Osemka relied on their starting six for the third set. Giants put only three of theirs on for its start and its three tactical substitutions during the set did not use the others. The format produced a marvellous and highly competitive set, Giant's one constant being excellent play by libero Tomohisa "Tomo" Makino who was to be judged the side's MVP. There was nothing between the sides and Osemka must have been worried at the prospect of the match going to another set (or two). However, they are clearly a resilient team and, having seen Giants close to 18:all after a time-out at 17:18 and to 20:all after a second at 18:20, held their nerve and their form to steer to success.

Osemka will have to wait for others to slip up if they are to challenge for honours at the end of the season as well as maintaining their form while Giants will be assessing their progress over the past three months and have more confidence in themselves in the New Year. Indeed, coach Guilia Ponti told me after the game, "We have played more as a team and everyone I called was ready, so I would have to say, 'I'm really proud of every one of the players in the team this season so far.'"
