Men's Div. 2 A : Southall fall at final Thunderball flourish

SGSS lost to Thunderball (Men’s D2A - London Volleyball League)
19:21 20:22 11:21

Two tight sets then collapse
SGSS Southall hosted Thunderball at the Dormer Wells Leisure centre with both teams fairly evenly matched on paper at the bottom end of the division. This made the game equally important for both teams in terms of the success for the first half of this season.

Southall got off to a better start and moved to a 9:4 lead. After which they seemed to tense up on the occasion and, much to the frustration of their Coach Rajinder Sangha, made a number of unforced errors which allowed Thunderball to recover and even out the set. Eventually Thunderball took the lead themselves at 13:15. The first set however was all still to play for and both teams felt they could win. Thunderball though now had the momentum and were in the driving seat. They kept the small lead and closed out 19:21.

Southall now had an option to change the system or try again with the same format. The coach felt without the unforced errors the set could be won and only made one like for like change. Thunderball on the high from set 1 were playing better and set 2 was nail bitingly close. 5:5, 9:9, 15:15, 17:17! Each team played out this set as if it was the fifth and not the second. Thunderball got an edge at the business end with a set point at 18:20 only for Southall to recover and with a great floating serve into the corner by their under 18 star Luke Eurs-Cloan. At 20:20 Thunderball hit top gear and pushed over the line and a fine float serve of their own from Yevgeniy Stotyka and took the decisive set two 20:22!

Set 3 was very different from the previous as Southall made a number of changes and reverted to a one setter system. Both teams started evenly but from the half way point it seemed as if Southall had lost hope and fizzled out mentally. Thunderball pushed on for what in the end was a relatively easy set win compared to the previous two at 11:21. A great festive result for Thunderball and well done to them. The return match should be another close encounter. Southall’s coach had a discussion with his team afterwards on what could have been, and how unforced errors in this match were key. All in all both teams enjoyed what was a very close game.
