Men's Div. 2 B : Pride resistance at Greenhouse
Posted by Douglas Barr-Hamilton on 2017/11/29 17:16:32 (34 reads)

EBC Greenhouse lost to Lionhearts Pride (Men’s D2B - London Volleyball League)
16:21 21:17 21:23 18:21

Encouraging progress in thriller
A thrilling game. The 1:3 result doesn't reflect how tight it was; look at the individual points per set. That does.

EBC looked by far the more assured side as the early stages of the match unfolded and they were quickly 7:2 to the good, excellent serving by Josh Veitch putting the visitors under pressure. At 15:9 they looked to be in a strong position but a combination of accurate serves from Janaazie Coppin and good play at the net by Sebastien Gerber, Misha Skurikhin and Charles Wolfe took Pride to 15:14. EBC recovered service but failed to add any more to their total and saw the opposition skipper and his accurate serves earn a set that had scarcely looked like going his team's way. Both sides had played well enough to know that they could win this match and the second set reflected this confidence. After an even start, Pride pulled away to 4:7 but EBC were on equal terms again at 8:all and play from there on was thrilling: one side then the other taking a single point lead. Eventually things reached 17:all. The youngsters' held their nerve. Despite the visitors' time-out at 17:16, they pushed on to take the set.

What can be said about the set that followed? Thrilling from start to finish, certainly. Excellent volleyball, not really for this is our second division. Entertaining, exhilarating, exciting, engaging, enjoyable: all of those things. Any player worthy of a special mention? Look at the team list below. For EBC, Axel Alabi and Ted Turner had replaced Stephen Cofie and Visman Thivaharan although Visram returned to the fray from 15:all to 21:20; For Pride, the starting six players remained on court throughout the set. In the end Pride won the decisive rally.

Coach Paolo Montalbano had used Efenikos Erdongan for the second set and he brought him back for the fourth. The close contest continued and only at the very end was there a sign of a slight wobble after Pride reached 18:20 with captain Gerber next to serve: a man Lionhearts could rely on.

Lionhearts Pride team secretary, Tsy Tocquica told me afterwards, "This has been a different start for us. This season it took longer to recruit the full squad and since the majority of our members are new, we are still getting to know each other However, the potential is there and it is just a matter of turning that corner."

This evening provided a sign they might be there.
