Men's Div. 2 A : IVA come-back to overcome Crusaders

IVA Persia beat Flaming Six Crusaders (Men’s D2A - London Volleyball League)
18:21 23:21 21:19 21:17
Three set recovery after initial setback
A thoroughly entertaining match started a few minutes early, both teams being eager to enjoy the beautiful sunshine outside on a day that was going to be an hour longer than normal because of the change to GMT.

Crusaders took a few rallies to settle but they then played very well although matched by their hosts to produce an excellent display, each side taking it in turn to dominate. First IVA went ahead 10:6 then Crusaders 14:10. A ding-dong battle to the end of the set with the home side closing to 18:19 before losing the opening skirmish.

IVA's new signing, Kasra Taheri who had come on as a substitute during the first set, opened the second, serving and taking his side to 5:0. A time-out then settled Crusader and they soon had the score-board ticking over and a wonderful display of volleyball followed. Almost nothing between the teams, Crusaders eventually levelled the score at 18:all. Things were tied again at 19:all, 20:all, 21:all. Wonderful. Side out to IVA. The experienced Sirwan Rasul rotated to serve and his shrewd placement put enough pressure on Crusaders to gain that vital point, the set and parity. As in the first set, each side enjoyed a single run of points during play that was very even indeed. First, with Jerome Facey serving accurately, Crusaders advanced from 8:all to 8:12 then, IVA's Arash Mohammadi in position one, they recovered from 10:13 to 10:18. Crusaders were not beaten and levelled things at 19:all but the home side's nerves held to take a one set lead by the smallest of margins.

Crusaders will be disappointed with their fourth set performance. It began very well as they won the first four rallies and moved to 2:6. However, they could not hold IVA's come-back as they raced to 11:8. Coach Adam Watkins needed a time-out at 11:14 to settle his players and they recovered well enough to force an IVA time-out at 15:13. Calm and purposeful, IVA played very well and looked home and dry at 20:15 but Crusaders saved match point and then scored one of their own. Cool heads were needed and IVA had them.

Only the third round of matches in the league and there are just two undefeated teams left in the division. And IVA entertain one of them Onyx B at Jubilee Sports Centre on 19th November. A great continuation to a great season.
