NVL Super 8 : Orcas startle Northumbria

London matches (Women’s Super8 - National Volleyball League)
Fifth set tie-break settles opening match
London's Pulsepoint Orcas and Polonia Sideout sides were both in action this cup week-end and the former had the daunting task of travelling to the north-east to face Northumbria who topped the league, unbeaten, last season then on Sunday, Durham who surprised the volleyball world by beating their local rivals 3:2 twice to earn the 2018 Super8 title. Polonia were expected to be a test for newly-promoted Oxford Students at Islington Arts & Media School to which the fixture was switched after problems during the week with the floor fittings for the posts at St. Benedict's.

And what a match opened the season! The first set could have gone either way before the home side shaded it so it was not surprising Orcas looked a little under the cosh in the second but they recovered to take the second and third sets convincingly and so very nearly matched the men's competition for starting with an upset.

It looked very like a reaction for the early part of Sunday's game in Durham as they lost the first two sets. But they had done that the day before and self-belief flooded back but, forewarned no doubt. Durham's resistance and determination did not waver and, though the impartial spectator might have wanted more, the home support knew the effort had to be immediate and they urged their favourites to third set success. Disappointment for the London side, then, but lots of hope for the rest of the season too.

Meanwhile, at the Islington Islington Arts & Media Centre in Finsbury Park, Polonia Sideout gave a baptism of power to Super8 newcomers Oxford Students racing through the first set before relaxing a little for a comfortable third set win. They meet Durham at Brentford Fountain next Saturday and want loads of support to push themselves up the table early in the competition - and avenge Orcas' loss.
