EBC Greenhouse beat SGSS Southall (Men’s D2A - London Volleyball League)
21:12 21:15 21:17

Recovery too late
EBC avenged their away loss in four sets in March and secured their second win of the competition as the A division's season came to its conclusion.

Ashley Trodden's young players made an excellent start racing to a 4:1 lead before slowly increasing it to 10:6 and closing the first set with a brilliant spell of serving by Matthew Burnett enabling Visman Thivaharan, Ted Turner and captain Nasir Khan to shine at the net. They took the score from 15:12, reached after some better play by Southall, to 21:12 to create a score-line that suggested a more one-sided set that had actually been seen.

It was Southall that started the second set the better. At 1:5 and 3:7 they were throwing down a challenge but it was one that Greenhouse met and at 10:9 took the lead for the first time. They managed to keep their lead at one or two points for a prolonged period as the score mounted to 14:15. A mini-collapse by Southall and some good play by the home side then followed and Greenhouse opened a 19:14 lead despite two time-outs and the set's end was in sight. Southall secured the next point but then side-out and a good serve by the Greenhouse captain put his side two sets ahead.

Greenhouse won the opening rally of the next set but Southall roared back winning the next four. Greenhouse settled but were still behind 6:8 when they won a side out and Nasir again rotated to serve. He settled his side brilliantly and they took their score to twelve before Southall settled, their time-out at 10:8 having failed to calm their jitters. However, calmer, they began to produce some good volleyball and looked like battling back into the contest at 17:15 but Greenhouse again applied some pressure and with some excellent play moved further ahead and finally closed the evening at 21:17, Southall having saved one match point.

So Greenhouse end one place above Southall in the final league table.
