Men's Div. 2 A : Bears success at Greenhouse
Posted by Douglas Barr-Hamilton on 2017/4/24 14:10:00 (199 reads)

EBC Greenhouse lost to Balham Bears Red (Men’s D2A - London Volleyball League)
11:21 14:21 16:21

Second spot secured
If Crusaders win 3:0 while this game is being played (23rd April) and again in their final game of the season, their winning only 2:3 would condemn Bears to third place in the division, 1:3 to a count back of points scored while 0:3 would secure second place. They clearly knew what they had to do.

From the opening rally on EBC's serve to the next four with Edward Ailsby serving, they raced to 0:5. A well judged time-out called by Ashley Trodden stopped the slide. For almost a whole rotation play became well balanced but on 10:10 Bears won the rally for Nick Stevenson to rotate to serve and his accurate placement took his side to 10:17. Another time-out, another break in concentration perhaps, and service was back with EBC. Alas, it was immediately reversed and Edward was back in position one. His testing serves and a determined front line of James Whymark, Ollie Miller and Simon Condon achieved the first of the day's targets.

The teams retained the same players for the second set although EBC changed the positions slightly which enabled them to challenge Bears' strengths more effectively but the determined visiting side maintained a slight edge throughout the set before a final flurry of scoring took them from 14:18 to a two set cushion, the introduction of Ralph Fernandes for the home side and Robin Bachor and Alexandre Gourgeot for their visitors not having had a great impact.

Bears retained their subs for the third set while EBC reverted to their original starting six in yet another rotational order. Again, the small change paid dividends. At one stage they moved into a small lead with some good play at the net by Matthew Burnett, Nasir Khan and Ted Turner, a time out at 9:8 eventually stopping their advance at 10:8. For a while neither side got the upper hand and an exciting period of play ensued as the score-board ticked over to 16:19. Reuben served; side-out secured by Bears. Skipper Rayyan Akram serves. It's good, the rally is won. second place is secure.
