Men's Div. 1 A : Richmond outlast Dragonball

Richmond beat Dragonball (Men’s D1 play-off - London Volleyball League)
19:25 20:25 25:21 25:22 15:6

Blast back from two sets down
"Is there a difference between A and B divisions?" That's a question that's been asked all season. In a great afternoon of volleyball played in a wonderful atmosphere and plenty of noisy support, the answer given turned out to be, "Very little."

Initially it looked as if the Spikers second team would have too much fire-power for Richmond and its excellent defence was at full stretch limiting Dragonball's superiority as it took a two set lead. By the third set, however, that defence had adjusted to the power and speed of attack and Richmond was initiating effective counter-attacks of its own. It took the third by four points, the fourth by three. These were well matched sides.

As a result, it came as a surprise when Richmond imposed themselves on the fifth and raced to a lead of 8:4 when the teams changed ends. Dragonball looked dejected and, although they continued to attack with venom, Richmond had the answer and the counter-attacking ability and deservedly won this deciding set.

Richmond went on to win in five sets against the Premier division's sixth placed Powerball. That suggests there is not too much of a gap in standard for other teams to leap and, with Richmond promoted from Division Two only a year ago, the whole league provides great competition.

Copper Box : QEOP, 9th May

Referee: Kassim Ukware.
