Men's Premier : Richmond overpower Powerball

Richmond beat Powerball Spikers (Men’s Premier/D1 play-offs - London Volleyball League)
25:21 25:23 23:25 21:25 15:12

Ten tension-filled sets
What an afternoon for Richmond! At mid-day they had started a two and a quarter hour five set match against division one rivals, Dragonball and then had to face the Spikers' club's senior team to decide if they should replace it in the Premier Division. It could hardly have been closer.

The first set had been tight throughout and it came as a surprise when, from 21-all, Richmond suddenly found an even higher level and won four successive rallies to take the lead. Looking a little shocked, Powerball did not seem to have the same level of determination throughout the second although there was never much between the teams as the underdogs eventually secured a two set lead.

Richmond made a poor start to the third but soon found their form although not sufficient superiority to overcome the deficit, the fight-back proving enthralling for the fans. The fourth was again well contested with Powerball always looking as if they could be masters and they eventually came away to level the scores.

They were exactly level: two sets all, 94 points each. A thrill was guaranteed, a tremendous finale was played out. At 14:12 Powerball should have closed to a single point but Richmond produced a super rally deservedly to take the rally, the set, the match and promotion. There was no MVP award given the nature of the contest but if there had been, I could not have decided between five or six players. Perhaps that's as well; two good teams had given us a great match.

Copper Box : QEOP, 9th May

Referee: Claudiu Florea.
